A guide to Numeris' TV Diary

tv diary

BBM Canada is now Numeris! While we're excited about our new look, it's just our name that has changed. Our organization will continue to provide the same important television and radio audience information to our members.

If you've come to this page, we can assume you've been invited to participate in our TV Diary survey. Thanks for joining us!

What's it all about?

Completed weekly, TV Diaries capture the TV viewing habits of all individuals two years of age and older living in randomly selected households across various Canadian markets.

For a three- to four-week period, you and your fellow participants are asked to record, in writing, which stations or programs you watch throughout the day based on 15-minute increments. You're also asked to capture the time you are not watching TV.

Upon receipt, Numeris scans the completed diaries and compiles databases of audience behaviour based on age and gender for each market. TV stations, advertising agencies and advertisers then use this data to determine who watches what programs in what format, and to buy and sell commercial air time.

You should note that we combine your data with information from other TV Diaries to produce ratings about groups of people, not individual people or individual households, and we never disclose the names, addresses or phone numbers of survey participants. In other words, your privacy will not be compromised.

How does it work?

One TV Diary per week is provided for each individual two years of age and older living in your household. Starting on a Thursday, each individual is asked to fill out his or her Diary. Depending on the age of household members, some participants may need a little assistance.

At the end of the survey week, simply mail your household's Diaries back to Numeris using the postage-paid envelopes.

Getting started

By now, you have hopefully received your TV Diary. Please rest assured that all the information you share with us will be kept strictly confidential. It will not be released to any marketers or sales people.

Ready to begin? Let's walk through the steps together.

Step 1: Tell us about yourself
Step 2: Record your personal TV viewing
Step 3: Return your TV Diary

Step 1: Tell us about yourself

To begin, please answer the questions on pages four and five relating to the TV equipment you have in your home. This will help us identify the stations and programs you're able to access.

To help us understand which programs and products are popular among members of your household, please answer the questions on pages six through nine, as well as those on the outside back cover of the Diary.

Step 2: Record your personal TV viewing

Below are survey section samples and instructions to help you record your TV viewing. Please record viewing details whenever you watch TV for five minutes or longer. Also, be sure to carry your Diary with you at all times so that you can record your viewing wherever it occurs.

IMPORTANT! If you don't watch any TV on a particular day, please mark an (x) at the bottom of the page where indicated. This lets us know that you didn't simply forget to complete your Diary for that day.

Locate the day and the 15-minute time slot during which you watched TV. Provided you watched at least five minutes of TV during that time slot, record program viewing. If you watched more than one program in a 15-minute period, record details of the program you watched most.

Write down the name or call letters of the station you were watching, as well as the channel number, in the space provided. As indicated here, please insert vertical lines to indicate how long you watched that station.

If you watched a purchased or rented program or movie, please print DVD or Blu-ray in the Station Name or Call Letters column.

If you watched a movie or program on a device other than your TV – e.g. your laptop, mobile phone or tablet – please print the name of the device in the Station Name or Call Letters column.

If you watched a TV program that was previously recorded using your PVR/DVR or VCR, please enter the original date and start time of the TV program in the green-shaded PVR or VCR section. Please remember to select AM or PM. As indicated here, please insert vertical lines to indicate how long you watched the recorded program.

Note: Station Name/Call Letters, Channel Number and Name of Program columns should also be completed in order to identify the recorded program.

Whether you watched a program on live TV, watched a previously recorded program or watched a program or movie on DVD or Blu-ray, write the name of the program you watched in the space provided –- even if you watched it on a device other than your television. As indicated here, please insert vertical lines to indicate how long you watched the program.

We want to know whether you tuned in via cable, satellite or antenna. For each program you watched, please mark an (x) in the appropriate column. If you watched a program at a friend’s home, the office, a restaurant or anywhere else other than your own home, please also mark an (x) in the column labeled Watched TV Out of Home.

Last but not least, if you didn't watch any TV on a particular day, please mark an (x) at the bottom of the page where indicated.

Step 3: Return your TV Diary

Thank you for completing your TV Diary. Please take a few moments to make sure you have answered all of the questions and completed the TV viewing portion entirely. Please also check the the Diary to make sure we have your correct postal code.

As soon as each member of your household has completed his or her Diary, place that Diary in its own postage-paid envelope and mail it back to us. Remember, it doesn't matter how many or how few programs have been watched. Even if an individual has watched no TV that week, we need the Diary returned.

Please try to return your TV Diary as soon as that survey week has come to an end so that we can count your TV viewing in our ratings.

Again, thank you for your participation.
